Apple has released its first emergency security update for iOS and MacBooks this week. While the update will eventually be installed automatically, we recommend that iPhone and MacBook users check and install the update now.
Called “Rapid Security Response”, the updates are smaller and quicker than the usual complete OS updates, especially on the iPhone. While Apple remains tight-lipped as usual about the issues this update might fix (to prevent any problems being exploited by cybercriminals until everyone has updated), you do need to be running the latest iOS or Mac OS versions to get them, so for some people, you may need to update twice – once for the core OS and once for the security update. Requirements for iOS are version 16.4.1, and for MacOS, version 13.3.1.
Once the update has been installed, your operating system version will gain an additional letter to signify the update installed. So, for example, todays update takes iOS 16.4.1 to version 16.4.1 (a).
